To be political in the medial east means to kill an important human since. I think politicians accept actions they spent their life developing the public understanding of it being wrong. Once they dominate, they start defending these actions!
Today, our Bahraini Minster of Culture and Media “Maye Al-khalifa”, a Royal Family member, decided to enforce all the Telcos to have standard blockage policy controlled by the government. The decision said that the Minster representing the government will decide the sites to be blocked. Sure, the dissention didn’t make it clear about the basis for any website blockage and didn’t declare the procedure for that action. With this decision, web-blocking will be legal by an order of the minister without a need for any Court view.
A journalist from Alwasat Newspaper called and asked for an opinion and I found nothing but the big word “Stupid decision”. “There are more important things to look after in our small looking for development country. This is waste of time and money needed to plan for the educational, cultural and financial developments”, I added. Beside this, I think it’s your right to block what you own, not what the others own and your people looking for. The ministry of culture is not supposed to build the guide lines for one united “culture”. And I wanted to ask the minister two questions:
- What is the role of the ministry of “culture” and media in the development of the governmental websites in general and especially the e-government?
- What actions have been taken to protect and develop a public awareness of internet crimes?
I don’t want the firs post to be full of “hate”. I hate this, but I also hate being treated as slave where I am paying my internet bills on time :(
